How to claim your name on social media platforms

Claim accounts in this order
Start with platforms relevant to your profession or where you're most visible: LinkedIn (especially important for professionals), Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram. Then move to TikTok, YouTube, and niche platforms in your industry. Speed matters—someone else might claim your name.
Use your real name or handle consistently
Decide whether to use your actual name, a professional variation, or a handle. Use the same across platforms if possible—it's easier to remember and helps people find you. Complete your profile with consistent information (location, profession, photo).
Set privacy and security properly
Enable two-factor authentication on every account. Make your profile appropriately public (LinkedIn should be findable; personal accounts can be private). Review default privacy settings on each platform—they often share more than you intend.
Make them active
Claimed but inactive accounts look abandoned. A bare or outdated profile can hurt your reputation. Add a photo, write a bio, and post occasionally. Even 2-3 times yearly keeps the account active.
What if your name is taken?
If someone else claimed it, report the account if it's impersonating you. If it's just a different person, consider a slight variation of your name. Adding middle initial or middle name usually works.
